For people who are new to Medicare or who have to make changes to their existing Medicare coverage, the process can be confusing.
Fortunately, Medicare has a great Web site, www.Medicare.gov, to help people navigate the system, apply for coverage, find doctors and specialists, compare plans and much more.
If you are new to Medicare — turning 65 — the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) hosts a series of Welcome to Medicare events across the state. If you are turning 65, you should receive an invitation to attend one of these events in your area. Take advantage of these informative presentations!
This section of Council on Aging's resource directory, Medicare 101, provides a general overview of the Medicare system and what MOST people need to know. To help you navigate this section, we've organized the Medicare topics as lessons. If you are new to Medicare — or don't know anything about Medicare — we suggest clicking through the lessons in order (01, 02, 03, etc.). If you are familiar with Medicare and know what information you are looking for, just click the lesson description that best meets your needs.
