As people grow older, they often find their circle of friends become smaller and opportunities for social interaction become fewer. Some might dismiss these life changes as a normal part of aging, however, with older adults, studies show these life changes can put them at a higher risk for social isolation.
Social isolation is the lack of social contacts and meaningful connections. Older adults may be socially isolated due to health and mobility issues, disabilities or the loss of family and friends. All of this can affect the physical and mental health of all older adults, putting them at risk for serious health conditions.
Here at the Clinton County Aging Up Community Center, we work to provide opportunities for social interactions. We have “regulars” who are active at our center. Some visit to attend an exercise class, take part in our Congregate Lunch program, or play games such as cards, Dominoes or Bingo. Some members do all of the above and make us wonder how they have the energy to do it!
I have learned plenty since I began my tenure at the Aging Up Center in October 2023, but what has made the biggest impression on me is the sheer importance of helping to prevent social isolation. Being with others can simply make life better.
The Clinton County Aging Up Community Center is truly more than a building, it’s a community – one that is vital to the health and well-being of its members. This community provides opportunities for fellowship and meaningful social interactions that often lead to cherished and supportive friendships.
All of us at Clinton County Community Action are so thankful for our Aging Up Center community and look forward to exciting and active times ahead!
