While it is true that prescription medications can help us live longer and healthier lives, it is also true that any medication has the potential to do harm—especially when misused. The misuse of prescription medications is one of our country’s most pressing public health problems, with adverse drug events being a significant issue for older adults.
To boost awareness of appropriate medication use for older adults (55+), the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy is presenting Safe Medication Practices for Better Health, regular workshops designed to offer helpful information and tips for things such as medication storage and safety.
These free, 60-minute workshops are casual and interactive – questions are encouraged! Many participants share their stories and find they are not alone in their medication-confusion.
The workshops focus on three main themes:
- Advocating for your own health. You are the most important part of your healthcare team.
- Learning safe medication practices. Only take medicines as directed by your healthcare professionals, store them securely, and safely dispose of them when no longer needed.
- Knowing the risk of medication misuse. Drug misuse affects us all.
NOTE: Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, at this time (9/20/2021) workshops are being held both in-person with the option for a virtual workshop, if requested.
I’m excited to announce two relevant, upcoming workshops:
