Planning for long-term care can be a complicated process – especially immediately following a health emergency. That’s why Council on Aging works to help people understand the importance of planning early for long-term care needs, including understanding their options for care and having important conversations with family members about care wishes.
In September, COA marked nine years of educating adults on the importance of long-term care planning through its Own Your Future workshops. Two workshops were held in Warren and Butler counties and drew 140 individuals. Three expert speakers covered topics including estate and financial planning, Medicare and Medicaid, advance directives, and long-term care options. Each attendee received a toolkit to help them develop a long-term care plan of their own.
Through a survey completed at the end of the workshop, many attendees commented that they valued the information they received and had a better understanding of legal paperwork and terminology surrounding long-term care. Many stated that planning with family is very important.
Most gave the workshop top markst, with 90 percent of attendees rating it as excellent or very good at broadening their understanding of long-term care planning.
