The honk and waves and pride walk are being organized with the goal of creating greater awareness of the civil rights of people with disabilities by promoting accessibility for all. The anniversary of the signing of the ADA is an opportunity to celebrate, educate, and innovate in the pursuit of full inclusion of people with disabilities in our homes, communities and workplaces.
Through services such as personal care, homemaking, transportation, meals, and minor home modifications, Council on Aging helps older adults and people with disabilities remain independent in their own homes and communities. Our programs and services are compassionate, cost-effective alternatives to institutional care for people of all ages. Additionally, older adults who are serving as the primary caregiver for an adult child with a disability can turn to Council on Aging for information and referral to programs and services that can help them become better caregivers.
The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. TheADA was intended to make society accessible to people with disabilities. It provides civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities, similar to those rights provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.
